If you're in the market for a new vehicle, you may want to consider a Chevrolet or GMC car, truck, or SUV. One unique feature offered by these brands is the new GM Super Cruise. This feature gives you a hands-free driving experience, allowing you to kick back and enjoy the journey. The following FAQs have everything you need to know about GM Super Cruise technology.
GM Super Cruise FAQs
What is GM Super Cruise?GM Super Cruise is the first real hands-free driving assistance system designed for specific roads, and it's available on Chevrolet and GMC vehicles. This innovative technology uses cutting-edge features to make hands-free driving easy and convenient, elevating your driving experience.
What Can You Expect With GM Super Cruise? With a focused driver and the right conditions, Super Cruise cars allow hands-free driving. This system works alongside OnStarĀ® and utilizes real-time positioning cameras, sensors, GPS, and LiDAR maps to identify curves on the road. It's designed to make those long drives or daily commutes more enjoyable and hassle-free. Every vehicle with a Super Cruise also comes with three years of connectivity. But after that period, you'll need to grab a Super Cruise plan to keep the features running smoothly.
What are the Requirements to Use GM Super Cruise?GM Super Cruise relies on a data link that provides real-time location tracking and regular map updates. To use Super Cruise, you need an eligible active OnStar Super Cruise plan. Vehicles with GM Super Cruise are also linked to OnStar Emergency Services, which means that if a driver becomes unresponsive while using Super Cruise, Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisors are ready to step in and help.
To use Super Cruise, you must also turn on your Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision System. However, you need to ensure the Teen Driver feature is switched off.
There are other things you need to keep in mind to use Super Cruise:
Your vehicle should be on a compatible road.- Lane markings should be easy to see (watch out for glare or bad weather that might hide them).
- Ensure camera or radar sensors are not covered or damaged.
- The Driver Attention Camera needs to recognize that you're on the road ahead.
To start things off with Super Cruise, just hit the Adaptive Cruise Control button on your steering wheel to activate it. Your Adaptive Cruise Control icon will light up in white on your dashboard. If it's active, that icon will turn green and display your current speed.
Once Super Cruise recognizes that you're on a compatible road and paying enough attention (plus all other conditions, like visible lane markings and available GPS, are good), the Super Cruise icon will appear in white on the instrument panel.
When it's safe, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to get it going. When both the icon and the light bar on your steering wheel turn green, you can take your hands off the wheel. Just remember: keep those hands on the wheel until you see that green light bar, which means Super Cruise is handling the steering for you. Press the button again to turn off Super Cruise or tap the brake pedal.
When Should You Not Use GM Super Cruise?Below are the instances when you shouldn't Super Cruise:
- If you're not on a road that works with it
- During challenging driving situations or when the conditions are sketchy
- When lane markings aren't clear or visibility is bad
- In tunnels or construction areas
- On slippery surfaces or in tricky weather, like rain, sleet, fog, ice, or snow
- On the shoulder of the road or service drives
- While towing a trailer, unless your setup has Super Cruise trailering capability
- When you're in an exit lane on a freeway or highway
